Dog Friendly Weekend Getaways in Virginia

Updated: Nov 11, 2020

With sensational colored leaves blanketing the landscapes, Virginia is an ideal destination for a quick fall getaway. Whether it’s culture you’re seeking or apple picking you want or if hiking is more your thing, you’ll find it all in Virginia. I’ve rounded up my top picks for weekend getaways that you (and your pup) will enjoy!

1.) Luray is number one on my list, a true hidden gem- especially for pet parents. In addition to checking out some pretty spectacular fall foliage in Shenandoah National Park, there are more than 500 miles of trails for leashed dogs to explore. For outdoorsy folks, dogs are allowed in campgrounds. Or if you’re like me and don’t quite like “roughing” it, pet-friendly lodging is available. In my opinion (and for the most relaxing experience) I would rent one of the many cabins or old farmhouses that abound in the area.

2.) Leesburg is another favorite of mine. Its walkable (and very quaint) historic downtown is brimming with pet friendly restaurants (37 to be exact). The area is also home to amazing breweries and wineries, most of them are dog friendly. Leashed dogs are also permitted to roam the grounds of Morven Park, a 1,000 acre property. When you’re ready to wrap up your day, I would highly recommend checking into the Landsdowne Resort & Spa. Spoiler alert: their Four Paws Pet Program includes a Daily Dally bed, dog treats and a water bowl. Pets and pet parents can socialize by letting their dogs run free at the Lansdowne Dog Park.

3.) If you’re local and looking for more of a “staycation”, Old Town Alexandria would be my pick. According to Leah Spellman of Visit Alexandria, “one out of every four residents in Alexandria is a dog.” With stats like that it’s no wonder that it is one of the most dog-friendly cities in the country! The city’s picturesque brick-streets are teeming with everything from a VIP Pet Salon where you furry friend can indulge in a spa treatment to doggy bakeries selling homemade treats and other goodies.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t tell you about Virtue Feed & Grain. Not only does this revamped 18th century granary allow dogs, they even have a doggy menu that offers everything from a 5 oz. grilled rare sirloin to frozen yogurt “bones” served with sliced green apples.

The Kimpton Lorien Hotel & Spa (a personal favorite) welcomes everyone (furry, feathery or scaly!) There are no weight or size restrictions and no additional pet fee. In addition to providing conveniences such as poop bags for dog walks, your pup will sleep soundly on their Wash’n Zip pet bed and plush pet pillow.
